Tahoe-area Stars at the Winter Olympics

There are nine Lake Tahoe area locals participating in the Winter Olympics in Canada.
  • Shannon Bahrke - freestyle skiing (won Bronze medal->)
  • Marco Sullivan - ski racing
  • Errol Kerr - skiercross
  • Elena Hight - snowboard halfpipe
  • Hanna Teter - snowboard halfpipe
  • Nate Holland - boarder cross
  • Julia Mancusco - ski racing
  • Stacey Cook - ski racing
  • Daron Rahlves - skiercross
At this point, I'm still learning what all the events are. We watch the events from home and from YMCA incline machines. At our YMCA, the treadmill and incline machines are lined up, one behind the other, so from the back row, you can get a sense of what TV programs are most popular. This week, most fitness buffs are watching the Olympics.

Schwarzenegger @ Opening Ceremonies

If you missed the Opening Ceremonies, NBC has it covered. This was the first time the Opening Ceremonies were held inside. About 60,000 attended in Vancouver's BC Place Stadium. Everyone in the audience wore a white poncho -- they must have been handed one as they went through security. The idea was for the audience to wear white and look like snow for the opening ceremonies! Talk about audience participation. Ponchos are also very practical for rainy Vancouver.

It was a surprise to see that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger carried a torch in the relays at the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. See below YouTube video, created by someone in the crowd. Friday night, 2/12/2010.

Science of the Winter Olympics

California Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell sent "tweets" on teacher tools for the Winter Olympics, including Science of the Winter Olympics by lessonopoly.org

Learn about aerial physics with aerial skiing, hockey, snowboarding, and other sports -- about 20 videos in all.

San Francisco Chronicle's Coverage

Olympic News coverage is in full-swing. Last Sunday's San Francisco Chronicle had a special preview section. Most large papers are covering it with their special local focus on athletes from their state or region. The SF Chronicle's 2010 Winter Olmpics "Viewer Guide" shows 17 days of television coverage, starting on Friday, February 12 at 7:30pm with the Opening Ceremonies. NBC Sports is covering the Olympics. The website has tons of videos to entertain viewers.

I'll have my FLIP video with me. Who knows if I'll be in the right place at the right time for some meaningful footage. :)

Heading North to Vancouver

This is a travel adventure blog by a California couple.
It is our first trip to Vancouver and Whistler.
It is our first Olympics.

We are doing our research, including watching The Olympic Series special collector's edition DVDs on the history of the Winter Olympics, Golden Moments 1920-2002.

We are following Squaw Valley's "tweets" on Twitter. They hosted the Winter Olympics back in 1960 and are eager to win the opportunity to host again in 2020. We plan to wear our Squaw Valley Olympic headbands when we are watching the outdoor activities on Whistler. We practiced using our Flip video device last month when Squaw Valley celebrated its 50th anniversary of hosting the Olympics.
